Marktdaten - Führend im kombinierten Verkehr durch die Schweiz
Market overview
Good chances for combined transport
European exchange of goods is growing continually and requires a broad, integrated transport network. New transport corridors towards Eastern and South Eastern Europe are becoming more prominent and they complement the transport services on the North-South axis. This development runs parallel to the gradual liberalisation of the railway market which makes possible the entry of new railway companies and new forms of cooperation.
Hupac’s market focus is the transalpine transportation through Switzerland. In this segment, two out of three tons are transported by rail. Between 2000 and 2007, combined transports increased by 68%. Road freight transport increased by 60% in tons, but fell 10% in terms of truck movements. Wagon-load transports grew by 23%. Transalpine transports through Switzerland rose by a total of 33%.
Non-transalpine combined transports on the East-West axis are also becoming increasingly important, primarily on the routes between the Western ports and the European hinterland.
Market forecasts for the period between 2000 and 2020 are projecting a 50% increase in European freight traffic. Alpine transits are expected to grow by 70%, East-West traffic by as much as 100%.
Combined transport has good market chances because it combines the advantages of road and rail and offers competitive alternatives to pure road transports. Quality in terms of on-time arrival of trains and prices in line with the market are the major factors for the success of combined transport.
In recent years the Alpine transit through Switzerland showed a considerable dynamic force. The Swiss shift policy results in the presence of a growing number of operators who Hupac must compete with. Hupac welcomes competition which has made a contribution to the market growth of combined transport as a whole.
